Zakat Calculator
Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke Allah’s blessings upon them. (Quran 9:103)
Zakat Date
Choose a specific date each year (e.g., 1st of Ramadan) as a reference point to calculate your Zakat obligation.
Zakat Calculation
To determine how much Zakat is due, we'll use a simple formula. Your total assets (A), minus your immediate liabilities i.e., debts and expenses (L) equals your Zakatable wealth (W).
If your Zakatable wealth is equal to, or above the Nisab, and you've had it for at least one lunar year, zakat is due.
Before you get started
Here are some documents you should have on hand before starting.
For guidance on your specific Zakat obligations, please reach out to our Islamic Foundation imams or consult the comprehensive FAQ resource prepared by Darul Qasim.
Assets
Value in US Dollars
The Nisab established by Prophet Muhammad PBUH was 20 gold dinars (87.48g of gold) or 200 silver dirhams (612.36g of silver). The scholars have given fatwas regarding the permissibility of using either one. Depending upon which standard you use, your Nisab threshold will be higher or lower.
As of February 19, 2026, the gold standard (87.48 g of gold) is approximately $14,500 and the silver standard (612.36 g of silver) is approximately $1,666.
Zakat is due on all gold and silver in any form (investment, jewelry, coins, etc.). Do not include the value of other forms of jewelry, such as precious stones and other rare metals.
This includes the current value of all shares that are permissible to own under the shariah.
Treat crypto like cash. Zakat is due on the current market value of your crypto portfolio.
Zakat is payable on these funds on a yearly basis. You may choose to pay before or after withdrawal. If you choose to pay after withdrawal, you must make sure to pay for the previous years also. Taxes will be deducted when calculating Zakat on one’s pension fund and retirement savings portfolio. Not because one does not own the full amount, but because liabilities are deducted. Early withdrawal fees will not be accounted for unless one withdraws early.
Liabilities
Value in US Dollars
Short-term debts are subtracted from one’s Zakatable Assets. Short-term debts include all debts to be paid within a given year.
Long term debts such as mortgages, car payments will not be subtracted from one’s Zakatable Assets except for the amount of debt due for the full year. For example, Ahmad has a mortgage of $500,000 to be paid over 15 years, with $20,000 being due each year. When calculating his Zakat, Ahmad will subtract the amount he owes for the year, i.e., $20,000, not the entire amount of the mortgage, i.e., $500,000.
